Frequently Asked Questions

What is Acceptance & Commitment Therapy?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) gets its name from one of its core messages: accept what is out of your personal control, and commit to action that improves and enriches your life.

The aim of ACT is to maximise human potential for a rich, full and meaningful life. ACT does this by:

a) Teaching you psychological skills to deal with difficult thoughts and feelings effectively – in such a way that they have much less impact and influence over you.

b) Helping you to clarify what is truly important and meaningful to you – i.e. your values – then use that knowledge to guide, inspire and motivate you to change your life for the better.

The 6-week group will cover:

  • The Art of Mindfulness and being present in this moment
  • Observing yourself in a truly kind and compassionate way
  • Working out what is truly important to you, and what you most value
  • Taking action toward your most important goals
  • Skills to enable you to hold stress and other problems more lightly

Who is the group suited to?

The group is open to young people aged 16-25 years. ACT has been found to assist individuals who experience depressed mood, anxiety, stress, difficulties with addiction or just want to learn skills to improve the way they feel.

This group is not suitable for individuals who currently experience difficulties with unresolved trauma or psychotic symptoms. Other forms of support will be more suitable for managing these experiences. If you would like more information, please ask a headspace staff member.

Do I need to register?

Yes. Numbers for the group are limited (up to 12 people). If you would like to participate, please provide your name and preferred contact details to a headspace staff member. One of the group facilitators will contact you via phone before the group commences to introduce themselves, ask some basic questions and provide some introductory information about the group.

I have some questions!

Please contact headspace Taringa on (07) 3157 1555. We will do our best to answer any questions or put you in contact with a group facilitator to assist you with your enquiry.
