headspace Taringa and Redcliffe Centre Update

headspace Taringa and Redcliffe are continuing to monitor the developing situation surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in Australia. We want to reassure you that the health and safety of our young people and staff is of utmost importance and we are doing everything we can to be proactive, prepared, and to work with the health authorities to prevent, detect, and contain the spread of the virus.

Currently, headspace Taringa and Redcliffe are open and continuing appointments as usual however, will start to see clinicians move to telehealth, web or phone services to deliver supports to young people. It is our highest priority to ensure all young people accessing services at headspace receive quality supports, despite the challenges faced by COVID-19. These changes to service delivery will allow us to continue to provide mental health services to young people, during times of social distancing and isolation.

Due to the social distancing requirements enforced by the Australian Government of no more than 2 people together, all therapeutic and non-therapeutic groups at headspace Taringa and Redcliffe have been put on hold.  In addition to this, for a period of time we will be limiting Community Development activities including school visits and presentations, events, workshops, forums and other initiatives. What moving to telehealth means for young people?

You will now be able to speak to your headspace worker from the comfort of your home! Our team of allied health practitioners will continue to support you from safe and confidential locations. We have created a step-by-step guide to support you with these changes.

 

Please read the following before your appointment:

 

48 hours prior to your appointment  

 

You will need to have access to one of the following:

  • A phone or mobile device for audio calls (Apple and/or Android devices)
  • Facetime (Apple devices)
  • Zoom Cloud Meetings App (Apple and/or Android devices, and Mac and Windows)

 You will receive an appointment reminder, whereby you can confirm your appointment by replying Y to confirm or N to reschedule.

For Intake appointments (first time visiting headspace):

You will be emailed registration paperwork that will need to be completed and returned before your appointment. You can do this on your mobile device or computer.


 

24 hours before your appointment 

 

You will be emailed a link to complete a confidential survey that will ask you questions about different areas of your life and how you have been feeling. If it’s your first time at headspace, you will also be asked for demographic information and other questions about your current circumstances and the type of support you are seeking.

Completing this survey helps us to provide a better service to you. If you have any concerns or difficulties completing the survey, please let us know by calling TARINGA (07) 3157 1555 or REDCLIFFE (07) 3897 1897.


 

1 hour before your appointment 

 

Before your appointment, please ensure you have the following ready:

  • If you are using Zoom for your session, please download the Zoom Cloud Meetings App on your phone or tablet device. you do not need to create an account. 
  • You have chosen a safe and appropriate setting to have private conversations
  • A charged device
  • Enough data or internet connection. We recommend using wifi to avoid potential charges. If using your mobile data, check with your mobile provider regarding any data charges.

At your appointment time 

 

If you are having a phone session:
Our practitioners will be contacting you at your appointment time from a private and secure location.

If you are having a Zoom session:
You will have received an email invite with a link to your Zoom session. Please do the following:

  1. Click link in email ‘Join Zoom Meeting’
  2. Enable camera and microphone
  3. Enter name and click ‘Join’.

Make yourself comfortable in your chosen location. Please be mindful of background noise including eating, busy areas, people talking in the background and other electronic devices (TV’s). We encourage you to put your phone on silent or ‘do not disturb’ mode.


 

After your appointment

 

To make an appointment:

In most cases your practitioner will be able to assist with booking your next appointment. If extra steps are required, someone from the headspace admin team will contact you to help out.  If you are due to obtain a new referral, we will let you know and ask you to see your GP.

If you need to make a payment:

If you are paying fee-for-service, we have the ability to take most bank card details over the phone and run them through our EFTPOS machine (number on card, exp. date and CVV).  We can then email or post receipt to you depending on preference. 

 

Please remember that headspace services are appointment based. If you are in crisis and need immediate support, please contact crisis support services listed at the bottom of this page.

If you are accessing headspace for the first time (Intake appointment)

We understand that seeking support for the first time can be daunting. It is OK to feel nervous about getting help. It can be helpful to have someone you trust with you during your telehealth appointment.

You will probably be asked a lot of questions in this appointment. This is to help us get to know you, make sure that all the important issues are covered, and to help develop the best solution for you. Remember that you don’t have to talk about anything you don’t want to. It’s natural to feel nervous when you start to see someone new. But as you get to know and trust your headspace worker you will probably find it easier to talk about what’s going on.

The appointment is your time. Feel free to ask questions about anything that’s on your mind so we can help you find the best solution or find the information that you need.

At the end of the session, you and the headspace worker will discuss suitable options for accessing the right support for you. You may be able to make a decision at the intake appointment, or it may be discussed on the phone after the session.

Some things that you will go through during your intake appointment include:

  • Client agreement and confidentiality,
  • Reasons for coming to headspace,
  • Discussion around thoughts and feelings towards home, education, work, relationships and areas of mental health,
  • Identifying your goals and developing a plan to work towards them.

What these changes mean for Professionals

If you are a professional who refers young people to headspace Taringa and Redcliffe for support, the process remains the same. We will continue taking referrals and enquiries via our usual means of phone, email and fax.

It is important for you to know that young people will be accessing support via telehealth systems. Some of our services are dependent on Medicare funding and therefore may have specific requirements or restrictions. These will be explained to the young person at their first appointment.  

 

How to cope with stress related to Coronavirus

It can feel stressful and overwhelming during an event like the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and we can all be affected differently. You might feel overwhelmed by the information, conversations and the increased levels of stress in your community. It can be hard to know what information to trust especially in a situation where things are changing so quickly. It can be helpful to keep up-to-date but it’s also okay to switch off from the 24 hour media cycle if this is getting too much.

Talk with a trusted adult, such as a parent, teacher, school counsellor or find out if there is a headspace centre near you.
