headspace Darwin is excited to continue the Aboriginal Mental Health Traineeship Program!

The traineeship program is a partnership between headspace National, Anglicare NT, headspace Darwin and the Northern Territory PHN. Established in 2017, the program is set to continue in 2018 offering training and employment to Aboriginal &/or Torres Strait Islander Youth Engagement workers.

This program aims to support the delivery of culturally appropriate services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in the Top End’s outer regional and remote areas. This will be achieved by providing better community engagement, increased access to mental health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and contributing to a more sustainable and culturally appropriate mental health workforce.

In its first year, the project provided two Aboriginal young people the opportunity to complete a headspace traineeship under the guidance of an Aboriginal Traineeship Coordinator. In 2018, the traineeship will continue, and headspace Darwin are currently looking to recruit two new trainees. The learnings from the pilot have informed the development of a cultural engagement framework for the new round of traineeships across headspace centres in Darwin and other regional and remote areas of Australia.

These roles will focus predominantly on youth participation, youth and community engagement, increasing access to mental health services/programs and increasing the mental health literacy of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander young people.
