Our friendly staff at headspace Capalaba can assist young people aged 12 to 25 with mental health, general health, drug, alcohol, work and study issues. Some services are bulk-billed with a Medicare card and valid Mental Health Care Plan.
We have a wide range of support available including Psychologists and Social Workers. Check out our tabs below for more information.
While we accept walk-in appointments, we prefer young people call us to book an initial appointment.
We provide wheel chair access throughout the centre including the toilets.
We are accessible by public transport with a bus stop outside the centre, and the park 'n' ride a short walk away. Please check the Translink website to plan your journey.

headspace Capalaba is operated by Wesley Mission QLD. All headspace services are funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care. Administration of funding is carried out by the headspace centre’s local Primary Health Network, in this case, Brisbane South (Brisbane South PHN).
Services
Mental health workers – which may include psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors and other workers – that can help if you're just not feeling yourself.
Workers either on site or linked to the centre who can assist you with work or study opportunities.
Centres have a range of programs and activities for young people. Just ask your centre what they have on.

About the role
headspace Capalaba is seeking General Practitioners, to join our multidisciplinary team supporting people 12-25 years of age living with mental ill-health.
As a General Practitioner your income will be derived directly from Medicare Billings so you will need to be eligible to provide services under the Medicare Benefits Scheme (MBS - Better Access).
As part of headspace Capalaba's team you will:
- Provide high standard GP assessments of persons experiencing physical and mental health issues,
- Liaise and work with internal and external stakeholders,
- Create Mental Health Care Plans for internal referrals, Psychiatrist and Allied Health Services,
- Provide high quality, primary health care services to those accessing headspace Capalaba,
- Respond to medical/health concerns presented by young people including history taking, diagnosis, investigation, treatment and referral as appropriate,
- Encourage and support young people to engage with sexual health, preventative health care, as well as alcohol and drug support,
- Have access to Clinical Supervision from our Clinical Lead,
- Be well supported by our administration team.
The Right Fit
The successful candidate will have:
- Current registration with AHPRA, and Medicare Australia;
- Experience liaising and working with internal and external stakeholders;
- Level 1 in Mental Health Skills Training

Allied Health Professional – Psychologist / Occupational Therapist / Social Worker

The Allied Health Professional is a member of the headspace Capalaba Team and will work closely with other staff members and other practitioners. The incumbent will provide high quality psycho-social assessment and evidence-based focused psychological strategies for young people aged 12-25 referred to headspace Capalaba, within the guidelines of the Medicare Better Access to Mental Health Care initiatives. To participate in a multi-disciplinary team, maximising care outcomes for young people referred to the service.
The Allied Health Professional:
- Consults with the Clinical Centre Manager, as required in performing key responsibilities.
- Consults with the multi-disciplinary team as required for care coordination.
Key Responsibilities Include:
The main responsibilities of the Allied Health Professional role require a high level of performance in the following key areas:
Clinical
- Provide evidence-based, focused psychological strategies (e.g. CBT, psycho-education, relaxation strategies, skills training, interpersonal therapy) to individuals or via group therapy to young people aged 12-25 years.
- Maintain accurate case notes for clients using an electronic clinical record and according to headspace Capalaba protocols and professional standards.
- Participate in care planning and case review meetings, contribute to care plans and participate in planned case conferences other health professionals involved in the client’s care as appropriate.
- Provide written reports to the clients referring bodies with information regarding assessments undertaken, care provided, and recommendations on future management of the client’s social and mental wellbeing, according to headspace Capalaba protocols and professional standards.
Compliance:
- Maintain client privacy and confidentiality and adhere to duty of care requirements and other relevant legislation.
- Adhere to appropriate standards of safety, welfare and health care for staff and young people within the headspace Capalaba service.
- Comply with continuous clinical quality improvement activities to improve the service provision and outcomes for young people who access headspace Capalaba.
- Ensure services are provided within the boundaries of the relevant Association’s Code of Ethics.
- Ensure compliance with all Wesley Mission Brisbane policies and procedures including WMB Charter, Code of Conduct.
- Ensure that the service is compliant with all external regulators and contracts, including funding agreements.
- Work in accordance with the electronic clinical record and associated information recording

We understand that asking for help when you're not feeling yourself can sometimes be difficult or uncomfortable. Because of this, we have made our referral process as easy as possible.
If you are a young person between the ages of 12 – 25, there are a number of ways in which you can access our services at headspace Capalaba:
- You can refer yourself
- You can have a friend or family member refer you
- Your GP can refer you
- Your school, TAFE, University or other service provider can refer you
If you are under 16 years of age, we encourage you to bring along a parent, care giver or support person for your first appointment.

Privacy
At headspace Capalaba we take your privacy very seriously and anything shared with us is confidential. We keep all your information on a secure database which is only available to headspace Capalaba staff. The law stops us from sharing your information outside these people unless we have your permission. Sometimes you do not want us to share your information and we respect that, however there may be times when we need to talk to someone without your permission, such as; if you or someone else is at significant risk of harm or if the law requires us to do so.
Cost
Services are free, with 10 appointments bulk billed per year covered by Medicare when you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
You don’t need to have a Mental Health Treatment Plan before contacting headspace and coming in for your first appointment. We can help you through getting a Mental Health Treatment Plan after you attend.
Bulk Billing is where headspace, instead of charging you, can bill Medicare (or the Australian government) for the health services that you receive.
For Service Providers (Including GP's and Government Departments)
If you are a service provider, GP or Government Department, please complete the referral form below and return to headspace Capalaba by email, fax or post. If the young person has a Mental Health Treatment Plan in place, please provide a copy of this with the referral form.
We do ask all GP's and external referrers to fill in our referral form (PDF available here) to make sure that the young person you are referring is suitable for service at headspace Capalaba.
Please note we are an early intervention service; our Senior Access and Engagement Officer will assess all incoming referrals and we will contact you shortly after to let you know whether the young person has been accepted into service.

To access headspace Capalaba's services for free, all you need to have is a valid Medicare card.
If you don't have a Medicare card but think you might be eligible, you can apply on the Human Services page by clicking here.
If you are ineligible to apply for a Medicare card, give us a call and we will direct you to alternative appropriate services for you, such as our fee-for-service options which range in price.
Parking
Parking is available in front of headspace Capalaba, which is accessed via Moreton Bay Road. We are located in the first office on the left of the building.
Transport
Public transport to headspace Capalaba is available via multiple bus services.
- The closest bus stop is located right outside the centre on Moreton Bay Road.
- Alternatively, the Capalaba Bus Station, as well as the Park n’ Ride are approximately a 10 minute walk from the centre.

Accessibility
headspace Capalaba has accessibility parking available in the centre’s car park. The centre’s entrance is located at ground level.
Please note that due to the ever-evolving situation with COVID-19, we are following the guidelines from the government in relation to group activities, and if outbreaks occur we will move meetings to videoconferencing rather than in person.

The Young Peoples Advisory Committee is made up of a team of volunteers, aged 16-25, who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people. Hailing from a diverse set of backgrounds, many of the Young Peoples Advisory Committee team have experienced their own struggles but overcome them to become advocates of youth mental health.
Young Peoples Advisory Committee Members are involved in:
- Attending fortnightly meetings at headspace Capalaba to continuously be improving the services we are offering young people
- Advise on various issues and topics relating to Youth Mental Health and the headspace Capalaba centre
- Participating and assisting in community education activities, social media projects, or presentations on the issue of youth mental health and well-being.
- Providing peer support or acting as community advocates for youth mental health which will: raise awareness of youth mental health, encourage young people to seek help early and to educate the broader community about youth mental health
- Maintain and update resources so that they remain relevant and youth-friendly
- Networking including promoting the program through word of mouth, networking leaving pamphlets at appropriate locations (e.g. community centres etc)
- Sit on interview panels to provide input during the recruitment of new staff to the centre.
As part of our team of dedicated volunteers, you will be provided with training and support to perform your role efficiently and safely including the opportunity to develop your skills in the area of Youth Mental Health.

Here at headspace Capalaba, we know that in order to best serve the people in our community, we need to know the people in our community. We truly value relationships with other community organisations, schools, and sports clubs and will take any opportunity to listen to the latest issues our community is facing. To this end, our door is always open if you have anything you would like to talk.
You will see us out and about at events such as Brisbane PRIDE, NAIDOC week, IDAHOT Day, R U OK? day, Youth week and many more. If you see us when we are out in the community, please feel free to come up and have a chat. We would also love to have a presence at any and all events being held by local organisations so if you'd like to have staff and members of our Young Peoples Advisory Committee be a part of an event or workshop you are holding, please email our Community Development Officer, Simone at sshepherd@wmq.org.au.
We also host many events at our centre and in the community throughout the year, and we would love to have you join! Any and all upcoming events that we are involved in will be advertised online on our Facebook and Instagram, and our website will be updated regularly. All activities are free unless otherwise noted and will be run by our friendly team.
