The year ahead! 2016 staff and services.

We know keeping up to date with our staff and new programs can be challenging! To make it easier we’ve put this overview together so that you’ve got a clear idea of what 2016 will look like. We’d love you to forward this page to anyone who might be interested and to include this information in any newsletters you might send out to young people and their families in the Bathurst and Cowra community.

headspace Bathurst is a free, youth-friendly service for all young people aged 12 to 25 years.  Young people can get in touch if they’re having a tough time, or would like to improve their health and wellbeing. They can also make contact if they’re not sure what’s going on, or feel like they need someone to talk to. Young people can access four core service streams at headspace Bathurst. These are mental health, general health, drug and alcohol services and vocational support. headspace Bathurst also offer services from our Cowra location.

When young people first make contact with headspace Bathurst they’ll speak with someone on our reception desk. In Bathurst we have Mary Boyd as our Project Support Officer. Along with making appointments and greeting young people to our service, Mary works to support our Clinicians and plays a key role in ensuring our day to day business runs smoothly. Cecilia Maloney’s role as our Intake Officer allows her to spend time with young people and their families when they phone or drop into our centre. During this time Cecilia is able to get a sense about whether or not headspace is the appropriate service for their needs and can take the time to ensure young people are safe and linked in with the best support. If you need to make an appointment at our Cowra Centre you’ll speak with Elizabeth Austin whose role as Administration Officer keeps our Cowra Centre in operation.

The services young people access at headspace Bathurst depends on what their needs and goals are. Their first appointment will be with one of our Youth Care Coordinators. They’ll talk through about what’s going on in their life and support them in working out what their options are. Our Youth Care Coordinators in Bathurst are Troy Oxley, Belinda Witherspoon and Nina Caveley. Troy Oxley is also the Team Leader. Our Youth Care Coordinator in Cowra is Liz Reynolds.

If a young person goes on to see a Psychologist at headspace they will need to get a Mental Health Treatment Plan from a GP. This is because these services are funded through Medicare and the appointments are bulk billed. Our team in Bathurst is Tracy MacFarlane: Clinical Psychologist, Michael Griffin: Clinical Psychologist, Elise Gale: Registered Psychologist, Barbara Geddes: Registered Psychologist, Yin Hourigan: Registered Psychologist and Ben George: Registered Psychologist. We’re also lucky to have Clinical Psychologist Debby Krahe as our Clinical Leader. Debby plans and delivers many of our group programs with a special focus on Mindfulness. Our Registered Psychologist in Cowra is Katherine Walker.

Appointments with our GP are also bulk-billed. We’ve recently increased our GP hours with Dr Tim now being available each week on a Tuesday and every second Monday. Young people don’t have to use other headspace services, or have an initial consultation with a Youth Care Coordinator to schedule an appointment with our GP. Dr Tim also travels to Cowra for fortnightly Monday appointments.

Young people in Bathurst and Cowra are also fortunate to also have access to Dr Syed Shah. Dr Shah is a Psychiatrist based in Ipswich. He beams into our Centre on a fortnightly basis, consulting with young people via a secure connection online. A referral from a GP is needed to get an appointment with our Tele-Psychiatrist with the appointment being bulk-billed.

If a young person is looking for a place to get school or work stuff done then they can drop into our hYLITE Centre. It’s located in Bathurst and open during school term (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) with CSU Mentors on hand to offer assistance from 3pm to 5pm. Young people can also drop in anytime on Monday for vocational support. It’s fully equipped with everything they’ll need to get that job application or assignment finished. There are other programs available and you can find out more by contacting Amanda Rohr.

Karen Golland will continue her role as headspace Bathurst’s Community and Youth Engagement Coordinator. This role is responsible for maintaining our online presence which includes updating our website, creating this newsletter and also posting information about mental health and the different services headspace Bathurst provides to our facebook page. Karen also works with local schools to coordinate our Year 9 education sessions and is a trained Love Bites facilitator. If you have a community event that you’d like headspace to attend or would like Karen to present at your school or workplace please email
